Eand accidents can happen in a small corner, especially with children. From minor abrasions to more serious injuries, it is important to know how to act quickly and effectively. In this blog we share tips and information about First Aid (first aid) specifically for children.❤️🩹
Why is first aid important for children?
Children are curious, energetic and often not yet fully aware of dangers. This makes them susceptible to minor and major accidents, such as falls, burns, choking or cuts.
The basics of first aid for children
Here are some essential first aid skills you should know as a babysitter:
In case of suffocation🩺
If a child is choking, stay calm and act quickly:
- Ask the child to cough if he or she can still breathe.
- In case of severe suffocation (really not being able to breathe):
- For babies: Place baby on your arm face down and give 5 firm back blows between the shoulder blades. Turn baby over and do 5 chest compressions.
- For older children: Give 5 back blows followed by 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver).
In case of bleeding🩹
- Clean the wound with clean water to remove dirt.
- Press a clean cloth or gauze firmly on the wound to stop the bleeding.
- If bleeding continues, continue to apply pressure and seek medical attention.
In case of burns🧸
- Immediately cool the burn with lukewarm water for at least 10 minutes.
- Do not use ice or butter on the wound.
- Cover the wound with a sterile, non-stick dressing and consult a doctor for severe burns.
In case of a broken bone💊
- Move the broken limb as little as possible.
- Call 112 immediately or go to the emergency room.
In case of poisoning🦠
- Immediately call 112 or the poison control center (088-755 8000 in the Netherlands).
- Try to find out what the child has taken and how much.
- Do not make the child vomit unless specifically advised to do so by a doctor.
