DFall is a magical season full of colors, crisp leaves, and cozy rainy days. This makes it the perfect time to get creative with the kids. Whether you’re a parent looking for a fun activity for the weekend or a Nanny looking for new ideas, fall crafts are always a hit! In this blog, we’ll give you inspiration for easy, fun, and kid-friendly fall crafts. Not only is it a fun way to pass the time, it also helps kids develop their creativity and have fun.

Autumn leaves art: a celebration of color 🍁

One of the best things about autumn is the beautiful leaves falling from the trees. Red, orange, yellow and brown – the colours are beautiful! Collect some beautiful leaves with the children during a walk and make art from them.

What do you need?

  • Colored autumn leaves
  • Paper
  • Glue
  • Pair of scissors
  • Markers, pencils or paint

Getting Started: Have the children choose their favorite leaves and glue them onto a large sheet of paper. They can then use the leaves to make animals, such as a peacock with a leaf tail or a hedgehog with leaf spikes. For older children, you can have them draw around the leaves and decorate the shapes with markers or paint. This combines nature with their own creativity!

Making an autumn wreath: a beautiful decoration for the door

An autumn wreath is a fun way to bring autumn into your home and create a cosy atmosphere. Children love collecting things and putting them together to create a beautiful work of art.

What do you need?

  • Cardboard (as a base for the wreath)
  • Autumn leaves, acorns, chestnuts and pine cones
  • Glue
  • Paint or glitter (optional)

Getting Started: Cut a large circle out of cardboard for the base of the wreath. Let the children glue leaves, chestnuts and other autumn finds onto the circle. Want to make it extra festive? Then you can have them add some paint or glitter to the leaves. Then hang the wreath on the door or in the living room – children will be so proud to see their work on display!

Chestnut and acorn animals: imaginative and sustainable 🌰

During autumn, you can find chestnuts and acorns everywhere. Perfect material to make animals! This is a great craft activity for young and old, where the little ones can let their imagination run wild.

What do you need?

  • Chestnuts and acorns
  • Matches or skewers
  • Scissors or a small knife (use this yourself for safety)
  • Markers or paint for the details

Getting Started: Let the children make different animals by connecting the chestnuts and acorns with matches or skewers. Think of a spider with eight match legs or a caterpillar of several chestnuts in a row. You can use the markers or paint to draw faces. These kinds of crafts are not only fun to make, but can also be used as autumn decoration in the house.

Autumn lights: make your home cozy 💡

The days are getting shorter and the evenings are getting darker. How fun is it to make atmospheric autumn lights together with the children? These lights are easy to make and immediately add a warm, cozy feeling to any room.

What do you need?

  • Glass jars (for example old jam jars)
  • Autumn leaves
  • Mod Podge (or other glue that dries clear)
  • A brush
  • Fake candles (safe for children)

Getting Started: Have the kids glue the leaves onto the glass jar using Mod Podge. Use the paintbrush to apply a layer of glue all over the jar and leaves. Once the jars are dry, place a fake candle inside and voila – you have beautiful fall lights that will magically light up your home!

Autumn paintings: painting with autumn materials 🎨

For the little ones it is always a success to mess around with paint. This fall you can do that in a special way, namely by using natural materials as a brush!

What do you need?

  • Paint
  • Large sheets of paper
  • Autumn leaves, twigs, pine cones

Getting Started: Let the children dip the leaves and twigs in the paint and stamp them on the paper. This creates an abstract painting in beautiful autumn colours. For a bit more structure, they can roll a pine cone over the paper, which gives a beautiful effect. This is an activity where they can get rid of their energy and create something beautiful at the same time!

Tips for crafting with children

  • Don't make it too complicated: Simple is often the most fun! Children enjoy the creative process, and it doesn’t have to be perfect.
  • Let them choose for themselves: Give the children the freedom to make their own creations. They may want to make a hedgehog but end up with an elephant – that’s perfectly fine!
  • Use what you have: Autumn is the perfect time to use natural materials, such as leaves, branches and chestnuts. This is not only sustainable, but also makes the crafts extra special.
