IIn Amsterdam and the surrounding area there are many different forests and nature reserves that are ideal for outings with children. Go together in search of the most beautiful autumn leaves, chestnuts and mushrooms! You can also make crafts with the autumn leaves and chestnuts afterwards. See below the list of eight nice forests and nature reserves near Amsterdam

  • Amsterdam forest

This is probably the most popular nature reserve near Amsterdam for families. You will find many walking and cycling paths, playgrounds, a petting zoo and even a climbing park. In the summer the large wading pool is also filled!

  • Diemerbos

This forest near Diemen, just east of Amsterdam, offers beautiful hiking trails and an adventure playground called 'Speelbos Meerzicht', which challenges children to climb and explore.

  • Vondelpark:

Although the Vondelpark is mainly a city park, it has plenty of green space, playgrounds and lawns where children can play and picnic. You can certainly look for beautiful autumn leaves here too!

  • The Twiske

This nature reserve is located north of Amsterdam and has many opportunities for walking, cycling, swimming and boating. There are also several playgrounds and picnic areas located throughout the area. You can also spot many birds there.

  • Fly forest:

A beautiful forest in Amsterdam North. You can find a lot of mushrooms here! There are many hiking trails and many different lakes.

  • Amstelpark petting zoo:

Located in the south of Amsterdam, this park offers beautiful walking trails and a petting zoo where children can view animals and interact with goats, horses and other farm animals.

  •  Schellingwouderpark:

The location is at the bottom of a dike with a playground. Dogs are allowed and it is also wheelchair friendly. There are also two cable pull boats, which is often a great success with children. You also have a beautiful view of the IJ.

  • Petting zoo De Bijlmerweide:

This is also a super fun place for children to come. There is a lot of greenery and in the summer there are also many flowers in bloom. There is a nice playground and you can get something to eat or drink!

These are really good hotspots in Amsterdam for a wonderful outing in the fresh air. In autumnal weather, don't forget to wear good rain boots and a raincoat. And some healthy snacks and drinks are always indispensable on an outing with children. Have fun!
