DWinter is a tough time for birds. It’s getting colder and food is harder to find. Luckily, you can help the birds and do a fun activity at the same time: make your own bird food! This creative and educational activity is perfect for cold days. In this blog, we share easy recipes and ideas to spoil birds and transform your garden into a paradise for feathered friends.🌳

What do you need?

🧡Frying fat or coconut fat (unprocessed and unsalted)

🧡Bird seed (available at garden centers or pet stores)

🧡Oatmeal, unsalted peanuts, raisins or sunflower seeds

🧡Apple peels or pieces of fruit

🧡Rope or wire

🧡Shapes such as cupcake liners, cookie cutters, or pine cones

Bird Food Recipes

Making Fat Balls

  1. Melt the fat in a saucepan over low heat. Do not let it boil.
  2. Mix birdseed, oatmeal, and possibly raisins into the melted fat.
  3. Pour the mixture into cupcake liners or an empty paper cup.
  4. Put a string in the middle so you can hang the ball later.
  5. Let the balls harden in the refrigerator.

Pine Cones as a Bird Treat

  1. Collect large pine cones while out walking.
  2. Spread peanut butter (without salt) between the openings of the pine cone.
  3. Roll the pinecone in birdseed.
  4. Tie a string around the top and hang the pinecone from a tree.

Apple Rings with Birdseed

  1. Cut an apple into thick slices and remove the core.
  2. Make a hole in the top and thread a string through it.
  3. Spread the discs with peanut butter and press them into birdseed.
  4. Hang the apple rings outside.

Making your own bird food is a fun winter activity that is both cozy and valuable. You help nature, spend time with your babysitting children and create a cozy atmosphere in your garden. So get out your pan, bird seed and creativity, and together make a feast for the birds.
